Baby Boomers 'giving back'?
The 'me' generation has often been used by sections of the media to refer to Baby Boomers in general but has had a hard time ‘sticking’. Baby Boomers are a diverse group of people with many giving something back to the community and making a difference. Whether it’s helping out at the local sporting club, the school, giving time to community projects, or being on a community board – people in the Baby Boomer age group (born 1946 – 64) are quietly getting on with growing and contributing to the communities in which they live. Traditional ‘volunteering’ is probably not a term that many Baby Boomers would easily relate to. Taking a specific interest in something and giving time to that over a specific period of time, or to achieve a specific outcome, may be a more relevant way to see how people in this age group think about contributions to their community. You may have thought about something you would like to do, or got frustrated at a lack of attention being paid to specific issues or the needs of people who are in some way disadvantaged. Now don’t get us wrong, this is not a call to muster volunteers or a particular campaign we are supporting, but a review of some opportunities out there that might just tickle your interest. We have independently chosen to review information and literature available from a variety of organisations and initiatives.
