Moving House Part 2

Well, you have moved in and met the neighbours, everything is either perfectly Zen, or you are in a state of Moving Shock, and can’t find the key to anything. Hopefully this won’t be the case, but anything is possible, and often our brains go into involuntary lock down when things become unpredictable or stressful.

Don’t worry, as everything usually resolves itself over the next couple of weeks, as you sort through things and ‘get your house in order’.

Moving tips for after the big day

  • It is a good idea to ask a close friend or family member to come over in the days after moving, as they can be a fun addition to your unpacking, bring along some afternoon tea, or dinner if they are great mates, and help think logically if something is missing, or doesn’t work. Avoid that other type – the overly eager person trying to ‘help’ you move, which really means interfering, as they are likely to do more harm than good.

  • Don’t expect to have everything in its place and every place as it should be straight away. It is better to store lots of things in the Garage (securely of course) rather than make quick decisions as to their final positioning.

  • A house has a character all its own, and you want to marry your style to it as best you can, unless you are in the fortunate position of having designed the spaces to suit. Try to think a little outside the square when positioning furniture and objects. It might have suited to have the hall table in the hall at your last home, but it might make a great end table in the family room or bedroom table in this new home.

  • Photos and Artwork, unless obviously suited to only on spot, should be the last things to go up. Set aside a day or 2 half days in the months to come, and delegate the responsibility to hang all your pictures and photos to either a skilled tradesman, or a handy member of the family. You are going to either take advice and decide, or decide yourself where they should go. This is one of the most personal tasks you will achieve as it will reflect to yourself, and others, how you see the world. Mark them out using newspaper and blue-tack first if you need to - it helps with balance and proportioning, and to resolve any arguments.

The next step is really to relax and enjoy your new home, and when you have some energy back, fill it with friends and relations, neighbors and associates, fun and laughter.
