Volunteering 1. - Australian Red Cross
Do you want to make a difference? There are plenty of opportunities to give back in ways that would match your interests, and benefit your community. Traditional ‘volunteering’ might not be a term many Baby Boomers easily relate to, but there are great fun ways to become involved in things that you have a specific interest in, or to achieve a particular outcome you may be passionate about. You can volunteer for a specific period that fits your lifestyle or timeslot and still keep up your other commitments. You may have thought about something personal to you that you would like to do, or have got frustrated at a lack of attention being paid to specific issues or the needs of people who are in some way disadvantaged. Now don’t get us wrong, this is not a call to muster volunteers or a particular campaign we are supporting, but a review of some opportunities out there that might just tickle your interest. We have independently chosen to review information and literature available from a variety of organisations and initiatives. Our Focus this month is the Australian Red Cross... In Focus - the Australian Red CrossThe Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is the World's largest voluntary organisation. Much of their work both in Australia and Overseas is carried out by volunteers, whose contribution is considered invaluable. Each year volunteers serve more than 200 million vunerable people Worldwide, symbolising the Power of Humanity. The first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1901, Henry Dunant, founded the OInternational Committee of the Red Cross as a voluntary releif movement. Voluntary Service is one of the seven Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent Movement. Since 1914 Australian Red Cross volunteers have been responding to nees at local National and International levels - in fact whenever disaster or emergencies strike, they are there. Today the Australian Red Cross delivers more than 60 local services and programs, mostly funded by public donation and corporate partnerships. by becoming a volunteer you will have the opportunity to contribute to the humanitarian efforts of the Red Cross at home and abroad.
