BB Fact Sheets – Health – Heart Disease

Prevention is Better than Cure
  • You are important and so is your health. No negotiation.
  • Heart conditions include: Heart Attack, Atrial Fibrillation, Blood Pressure, Coronary Heart Disease (CHD), Chest Pain, Heart Failure, Stoke, Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Palpitations
  • Take a moment to consider the risk factors for heart Disease – age, gender, diet, physical shape, level of activity, family history, lifestyle, smoking, high blood cholesterol, physical inactivity, diabetes, high blood pressure, being over weight, and depression.
  • Talk to your doctor and seek information on foods, exercise and lifestyle changes which could help lower your chance of getting or having heart disease, including lowering blood pressure, cholesterol and reducing weight as advised by your Doctor.
  • If you are over 45, ask to have a heart check up and have one regularly as recommended by your doctor and/or specialist.
Baby boomers and High Blood Pressure
  • Heart Disease is a problem many Australian Baby Boomers have to face as they enter into the ‘middle years’.
  • A stressful lifestyle, poor attention to diet, and a lack of appropriate physical exercise are all contributing factors to heart disease. Baby boomers are often juggling several demands from family, work, relationships, children at once which may leave little time to think about maintaining a healthy balance.

What can I do?
  • The best person to talk to about heart disease is your doctor in the first instance. They can discuss your concerns with you and arrange a check up during your consultation, remember it is better to be safe than sorry. They can discuss with you ways of lowering your risk of getting heart disease.
  • Ask members of your family if they have or someone else in the family has had heart disease as it commonly runs in families.
  • Know your numbers - blood pressure, cholesterol, and waist circumference.
  • Review your diet, weight and the amount of exercise you do.
  • Find out more information from the Heart Foundation of Australia.
