BB Fact Sheet – Recreation – Lawn Bowls

Why play Lawn Bowls?
  • Play Lawn Bowls and help to improve your fitness.
  • Lawn Bowls can improve your coordination, confidence and self-esteem.
  • You can learn the basics in minutes, and spend years mastering Lawn Bowls.
  • Join a team and get involved in your wider community.

Baby Boomers and Lawn Bowls
  • Lawn Bowls is extremely popular in Australia, with an estimated 296,000 men and women playing in 2008, from all age groups. A large contribution to this is from the Baby Boomer generation.
  • Lawn Bowls is gentle on the body, so it’s a good sport no matter what your level of fitness or mobility, and can be part of your Preventative Health strategy. Because it’s low-impact, it’s low-risk, too.

Getting started
  • Lawn Bowls is a game of strategy as well as skill, and you can play both offensively and defensively. There are different levels of play, and both competitive and social teams.
  • Lawn Bowls is a social game, so why not join a club with a friend? Teams consist of four players, or you can play singles matches.
  • If you purchase your own set, and take good care of them, they can last ten years, so it doesn’t need to be an expensive interest.
  • Don’t put it off, start now! All you need is some flat-soled shoes. Enquire at the club you wish to attend whether they have dress standards, but most of the time you can wear comfortable clothes.
  • Most clubs have sets of bowls for you to borrow (both for beginners and visitors). Some clubs also offer free come-and-try days, which are a great way to learn about the game and meet other people just starting out too.
